Register your business name

You need to register for an account if you want to:

• register your business name and you already have a trading licence
• make a change to your business name
• cease your business name.

Applying for a business name / trade licence

If you want to register your business name you need to first apply for a trading licence from the Government of Jersey.

To do this, you need to fill out an online form on the Government of Jersey website. This form will also allow you to complete your business name application.

You don't need to apply for a business licence if you meet all three of the following criteria:

• have 'entitled' or 'entitled to work' status, and
• you're the only employee, and
• you work for less than 8 hours per week

If you hold a trading licence and need to register your business name

If you already have a business / trading licence from Customer and Local Services, but you need to register your business name, you will need to create a myRegistry account. Once registered select 'start new submission' and then 'business name registration'.

Form question	Guidance
Proposed business name	Enter the business name you would like register. You must 'check name' to complete an initial check to see if the name is available. Your requested name will need to be reviewed. We cannot guarantee that it will be accepted and you may need to change your requested name if it is not suitable.  Suitability of a name.
Nature of business	Select from the list, the type of trading activity your business will be undertaking. If you are a local business, you can only select number 4, 5 or 6.
Description of business activity	Provide a description of the proposed principal activities of the business.
Translated business name	If foreign words are used, provide the English translation.
Trading licence number	The undertaking reference number provided to you by Business Licensing. If you do not have this you will need to apply for a trading licence. To do this, you need to fill out an online form on the Government of Jersey website. If you don't need to apply for a trading licence because you have 'entitled' or 'entitled to work' status, you're the only employee and you work for less than 8 hours per week, enter '000000' as the RU number.
Trading start date	The date that you will commence trading. We will register your business name as at the date we receive the submission, unless we required further information.
Place of business	The principal place at which business is carried on (operating address). This must be an address in Jersey.
Correspondence address	The address for service and correspondence (subject to approval).

Applicants	Provide all required details of the applicants of the business name. You can add an individual applicant or a legal entity, for example, if the business name will be owned by a limited company.

Make changes to your registered business name in myRegistry

Each business name will need to appoint a nominated person to submit any changes to a business name via myRegistry. Any of the current owners of the business name can be appointed as a nominated person. This is an operational requirement for MyRegistry, any changes cannot be submitted to us without a nominated person.  

You can submit any of the following changes by completing in myRegistry.

• change your registered business name
• change your registered business name address
• add, remove, or update details of the business name owners 
• change the nature of business of your business name

Go to your portfolio, select the business name you want to make the change to and select 'start new submission'. Select the form you want to file, you may need to file more than one form if you are submitting more than one change.

Form question	Guidance
Effective date of change	Enter the date that the change occurred or will occur. We will register the change as at the date we receive your submission, unless we require further information.

Change business partner details - help completing the form

Add applicant	Provide all required details of the applicants of the business name. You can add an individual applicant or a legal entity, for example, if the business name will be owned by a limited company.
Update applicant	Update any of the business name owners' details.
Remove applicant	Remove an owner from the business name.

Remove your business name from the register

Go to your portfolio, select the business name you want to make the change to and select 'start new submission'. Select the 'cease business name form'.  

A notice of cessation form must also be completed and signed by all of the owners of the business name. This must be uploaded within your submission in myRegistry.

Form question	Guidance
Cessation date	Enter the date the business name ceased to conduct business.  We will register the cessation as at the date we receive your submission, unless we require further information.
Nature of business	Select from the list, the new type of trading activity your company will be undertaking. If you are a local business, you can only select number 4, 5 or 6.
Upload file	You must upload a copy of your cessation form, signed by all of the owners of the business name.Notice of cessation form
