Third year of support for World Investor Week campaign
The Jersey Financial Services Commission (JFSC) is once again supporting World Investor Week – a global awareness campaign to promote investor education and protection.
The JFSC is one of 88 jurisdictions around the world taking part in the week-long annual campaign, which is promoted by the International Organisation of Securities Commissions (IOSCO)*.
From 30 September to 6 October 2019, the regulator will run various activities to re-emphasise the basics of investing and address any questions Islanders may have about online investments, digital assets and Initial Coin Offerings.
Mike Jones, JFSC Director of Policy and Risk, commented:
“One of our primary remits is to protect members of the public and reduce their risk of financial loss. To do this we regularly raise awareness. Through our on-going financial education programme and campaigns, we already reach a large proportion of the local community and schools. In fact each year we deliver our financial literacy sessions to more than 2000 Island students. World Investor Week reinforces this existing work and helps us to reiterate these important messages to Islanders, ensuring they know how to protect themselves when making financial investments”.
During World Investor Week, the JFSC will be hosting public events, running campaigns, and engaging with local primary schools to help raise awareness about financial education among Jersey’s youngest consumers.
On 2 October the regulator, along with other island agencies, will be holding a “drop-in” session at the Town Hall focusing on what good financial advice looks like. The JFSC, Jersey Fraud Prevention Forum, Channel Islands Financial Ombudsman, Office of the Information Commissioner and Christians Against Poverty will be on hand to offer information to Islanders on what they should expect from financial advisers, their information protection and consumer rights, and the options available to them if they believe they have received bad financial advice.
On 3 October, Islanders can also attend a Jersey Consumer Council Lunchtime Talk at the library on “The regulator in your community”.
