Focus examinations: a simpler, more targeted supervisory approach
Our 2026-2030 strategy focusses on a more risk based and proportionate approach. As part of this, we are introducing focus examinations as a new type of activity alongside our financial crime and thematic examination programmes. Focus examinations allow us to understand how you meet your regulatory requirements in a specific, clearly defined area, without the scale or disruption of a full examination.
Key features and benefits
- minimal advance documentation: reduces the uploading of documents, as we will request only essential extracts from relevant documents
- short onsite period (typically half a day): involves less time commitment than a full examination, minimising disruption to business-as-usual activities
- open and interactive format: allows you to demonstrate how your controls operate in practice, including walking us through relevant processes, without lengthy written requests
- tailored feedback: we will provide you with feedback specific to your business and the focus area, identifying both strengths as well as areas for enhancement
- industry-wide feedback: we will share anonymised observations to help firms understand emerging good practice, common challenges, and areas where improvements are typically needed
- more proportionate supervisory approach: these features are designed to reduce disruption while still providing assurance that systems and controls meet regulatory requirements
- assessment across sectors: allows us to assess the focus area across a range of sectors
Next steps
We will commence the focus examinations in early June, with the initial focus topic being targeted financial sanctions. Those entities selected will be notified by email shortly, including confirmation of the process and the information we need from you.
